Hello NorCATA Members!

Hope all of you had a good summer and that you have settled into the coming fall.

First, I hope by now you have seen the fliers for our November seminar, “Creative Caffeine: Wake Up & Inspire Your Creativity.”  It is a, “Day of Self Care & Reflection for Creatives.”  We are very excited to offer this day to our members this year.  Many of you have been asking the Board about having our next Asilomar conference and we have been listening.  Unfortunately Asilomar has raised their prices, to the point where we don’t have the funds to secure time there.  So, in lieu of having a weekend conference, we decided to have a one day seminar and invite some big names.  Eric Maisel, renowned creativity coach and author, as well as Mariabruna Sirabella, international SoulCollage® Facilitator, will be our presenters for the day.  We are very excited about this day-long seminar and look forward to seeing all of you there.

I would also like to thank all of you who attended our summer workshop, entitled “Teaching Artistic Competence in Therapy” with Shalene Hatton.   I’d also like to thank Stacey and the folks at Grace Community Center for offering their Art and Wellness Studio for the day.  The art and the ambiance at the center was a wonderful addition to the day.  We had more than 30 people in attendance and added a bunch of new members.  The feedback has been great!

In the next few months you will receive information about renewing your NorCATA membership!  Chelsea, our Membership Director, will be sending out information to renew online.  We look forward to your continued support.

I attended the AATA Conference in Washington, DC this past July and saw a few of you there as well.  For those of you who didn’t attend, it was a great conference (not as good as the one in Sacramento, of course!) and has some great keynote speakers and information.  AATA has posted the keynote speeches on-line.  Check the website for more information. AATA also rolled out some new information and initiatives.  Below you will find information and links to new art therapy toolkits, the new volunteer action center and the mentor program.    Check the links for more information!

Thanks for your continued support and encouragement.

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) applications are now available on the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) website for those seeking grandparenting, reciprocity, traditional, and out-of-state paths to licensure. Please visit www.bbs.ca.gov/ and http://calpcc.org/ for more information about licensure requirements, providers of the required coursework, study guides, and dates for the examinations.

This is very exciting news! NorCATA has been working for the past eight years to bring counselor licensure to California and in January 1, 2010 it became law.

Additionally, legislation to extend the LPCC “grandparenting” period until December 31, 2011, was signed by the Governor on August 1, 2011. Grandparenting applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2011. Legislation was also signed repealing the amendment requiring individuals granted an LPCC license during the grandparenting period, that do not possess an MFT or LCSW license, to be subject to further examinations in order to renew the LPCC license. Also passed was legislation allowing applicants seeking licensure during the grandparenting period to obtain the required supervised hours of experience under a “professional clinical counselor, or equivalent.

The BBS was given an exception to the state hiring freeze in order to hire staff to implement the LPCC license. This is good news, since it will mean that application evaluations can be accomplished in a timely manner. However, it is to your advantage to submit completed applications and all documentation required to prevent further delays. The fewer times the BBS staff needs to request more information from an applicant, the faster an application will move through the process.

Thank you California Association for Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors’ (CALPCC) for being instrumental in bringing the LPCC to California.

CALPCC was created to protect the license and to serve newly licensed professional clinical counselors. CALPCC was formerly the California Coalition for Counselor Licensure (CCCL), the original organization that led the successful effort to achieve licensure for counselors in California. CALPCC’s leaders will utilize their relationships in Sacramento and their knowledge of the legislative/advocacy process to ensure the effectiveness and credibility of the LPCC. If you are pursuing the LPCC, please consider becoming a CALPCC member in addition to becoming a NorCATA member.

Dear NorCATA members,

I hope everyone has had a summer filled with relaxation, adventures and creativity! NorCATA had an inspiring workshop this summer with Shalene Hatton, ATR, MFTI in which she presented Teaching Artistic Competence in Therapy.  Shalene brought many wonderful examples of the projects she does with the students at the Esther B. Clark School where she runs the art therapy program.  Her presentation covered how she works with students with emotional, behavioral and learning problems to bring out their artistic skills by setting the bar high, introducing them to artists from art history and teaching them specific art making techniques.  A huge thank you to NorCATA board member Stacey Thompson and the staff of Grace Community Center for allowing us to host the summer workshop at Grace’s Art and Wellness Studio in San Jose.  Many in attendance remarked what a great setting it was.

I am very excited for our upcoming seminar on November 12th, Creative Caffeine: Wake Up & Inspire Your Creativity, A Day of Self-care and Reflection for Creatives. It is an all day seminar from 9-4pm with renowned creativity coach Eric Maisel presenting, Your Best Life in the Arts in the morning.  After the break for lunch International SoulCollage® Facilitator Mariabruna Sirabella will run a SoulCollage® workshop to get your creative juices flowing through the art of SoulCollage®!  It will be an inspiring day! Registration will be available on the NorCATA website starting October 1st.  Sign up early as space is
limited!

Just one other reminder for those of you who mark your calendars early, our Annual Business Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 29th 2012 at Fort Mason. Our presenter will be art therapist Liz Beck who runs Liz Beck Designs, where she creates websites specifically for mental health professionals.  Liz will be speaking about navigating being online as an art therapist.  I'll share more details in the next newsletter.

I look forward to seeing some new faces in November at our seminar.  In the meantime best wishes for a wonderful fall!

Best,
Kristina DiTullo

We at NorCATA have adopted a green mission to decrease our use of paper/resources. The membership drive is now paperless. To become a member you can do so here on www.norcata.org or attend the annual business meeting or a workshop and pay in person (with no extra fee).

Help, I am new to NorCATA and I want to know how to join?

Click on this link and see descriptions of membership levels.  Make your selection by clicking the paypal/subscription button below the membership type that best fits you. You do not need a pay pal account and can pay by credit card, just ignore request to log in or join paypal, there is always an option to proceed without it.

Once you have completed the payment process you will receive an e-mail with your receipt.  You will also receive a second e-mail that provides you with the login and password you will need to get into our members only section of www.norcata.org. If you do not see these e-mails in your inbox, please check in your spam folder. Note that the password may take 3-5 business days to work, as your account needs to be processed. If you try to log in before that time you will be redirected to a home screen with blank log in box. After your account has been processed you will log in and see a screen that says "Congratulations!!! you have successfully logged into NorCATA."

When you are able to log in click"Manage Your Account Profile" and add your full name, address, region and credentials to our database. This information is used for the NorCATA board to identify you, and unless you select to be in the members-only directory it will not be viewed by others.

Help, I was a member years ago and now want to renew on-line, what do I do?
Our new on-line system has no knowledge of members previous to 2010. So you will go to www.norcata.org and click on "Membership: NEW MEMBERS" as you will be new to our on-line database. See the above question for more details on the process.

Help, I was a 2011 member and want to renew for 2012, what do I do?
Visit www.NorCATA.org and login using the login and password you were given in 2010.  Once you are logged in you will be brought instantly to a screen with "renew your membership" on the top and membership types and payment buttons.  Select the "paypal/pay now" button below your appropriate membership type and then follow the prompts. You do not need to have a paypal account or use a paypal account, simply ignore all requests to do so and use a credit card. Once you have paid in your e-mail you will receive an e-mail from both norcata (login/password) and paypal (receipt). This process will generate a new account for you. To maintain your profile information and allow you to  maintain the same login and password our membership director will be manually deleting the new account and will re-activate your old account. Please allow 5 business days for this process to be complete, and then you will be ready to again access the members only section when visiting www.norcata.org.

How do I know if I am a current member?
We have suspended all expired 2010 accounts, so if you log in using your NorCATA login and password and are brought instantly to a screen with membership types and payment buttons then you are needing to renew. If you have never paid on line and/or received a on-line password/login name then you most likely have not been a member since before 2010 and its time to "become a new member" in our new on-line system.

I just joined in October why am I being asked to renew?
NorCATA, like many professional organizations including the American Art Therapy Association, collects dues annually at the beginning of each year. To ensure you get use of your full benefits be sure to renew in December or January.

Do I really need to "Manage My Profile"?
Yes! Once you are a current 2012 member please be sure to login at www.norcata.org and click on "Manage Your Profile." If you do not complete this information we only have an e-mail address as your identification and contact, with no name, credentials, region, or address attached.  Also this is where you can select to be in our on-line members only directory and listed as a supervisor.  If you intend to be in our directory it is recommended that you use your work or preferred professional contact information when completing the profile.  If you chose not to be in the directory your address can be viewed only the board and will be used to send out important information including voting ballots.

Can I still pay by check and mail in my membership application?
Yes, however we now have a $15 dollar processing fee for use of the paper application. This fee is waived however if you attend our annual business meeting or a workshop and provide your check and application in person.

Do I need a pay pal account to pay on-line membership?
No. You can pay by credit card. Just select the button for payment and it will five you a credit card option. Ignore any prompts to get a paypal account, its not needed.

I just became a member on-line and my provided password did not work, why?
It takes 3-5 business days for your payment and account to be verified, please try again later.
You will know when your account is processed because when you log in you will see "Congratulations!!! You have successfully logged into NorCATA" instead of being returned back to the home page with a blank login box.

I don't remember my username or password, what do I do?
Visit www. norcata.org and go to the login box and look for "Lost your username or password, find it here." If you click the word "here" it is a link to help you get your lost information.

Who do I send my change of address to?
With our new on-line system you can change your address any time.
Visit www.norcata.org. Enter your username and password. Click on "Manage Your Account Profile."
Edit your information and it is instantly changed in our system.

I did not receive the NorCATA e-newsletter, why not?

I don't like to use e-mail and am not comfortable on a computer, can I still be a member?
